Light fixtures for the living room – a large variety of lights fulfils different requirements

Being a room where the inhabitants as well as their guest usually spend most of their time, the living room plays an important role. In this room, the visitors take a seat on the sofa, the inhabitants enjoy movie nights or gaming nights with friends, the little ones play on the floor or you simply relax after a stressful day by reading a good book in your armchair. The versatile use of the

living room requires the combination of
several lights so that different requirements can be fulfilled.

A centrally located ceiling light or a chandelier are an integral part of a living room. They are responsible for the basic illumination of the room; a brilliant example for such a light is the Artemide Mercury mini Soffitto. These lights are

assisted by further light sources such
as floor lamps, table lamps and pendant lights. Here, the aim is to combine several light sources to create direct and indirect light in order to ensure a harmonious illumination of the living room – without producing sharp
contrasts between light and dark which put excessive strain of the human eye and make the room look “unbalanced”.

Living room lights providing for ambient lighting, zone lighting or mood lighting

An uplighter such as the Flos Stylos emits its light upwards. The light beams are then reflected by the living room ceiling so that soft and absolutely glare-free ambient light is produced. An uplighter placed in the corner of a room turns a sofa corner into a homey oasis of light. An adjustable floor lamp next to an armchair of a sofa, for instance, the Artemide Tolomeo Lettura makes sure that you can enjoy reading the daily newspaper, a book or a magazine by providing a focused lighting. Here, this luminaire with the adjustable arms and the flexible light head directs the light exactly to where it is needed.

A table lamp located on a side table also takes over the function of a reading light in the living room. A further popular lighting solution in this room is the pendant light. The Marset Discocó, for instance, which emits its light in all directions provides for basic lighting as well as for pleasant zone light on the coffee table, just like the Flos Skygarden.

In order to effectively highlight paintings, artworks, cupboards and shelves, spotlights may be considered. A Mawa Design Wittenberg ceiling light, for instance, impressively puts selected

objects in the limelight. For this purpose, spotlights can be rotated by 355° and pivoted by 90°. Furthermore, this flexible light source serves as an unobtrusive eye-catcher thanks to its reduced design language.
A mood light, which is often placed on a sideboard or a commode, provides for a charming lighting accent. An example of such luminaires are the Tecnolumen table lamps, for instance, the WG 28. Being representatives of the legendary Bauhaus style, these lights achieved cult status and not only visually upgrade the room but also produce an atmospheric feel-good lighting.

Space saving & easy on the eyes

If there is a lack of space it is advisable to purchase a clip-on light. These lights can be easily attached to a table, a
cupboard or a shelf and they do not take up much valuable space. Despite their reduced size, these practical lights do not compromise on functionality or sophisticated design. Those who want
to ascertain themselves should, for instance, take a look at the U-Turn clamp light or the Projecteur 165 mini which are both, flexible and elegant.

The appropriate television lighting is also an important topic in the living room.
People often make the mistake of turning all the lights off in order to be able to concentrate "better" on the film.
Since this creates a too sharp contrast between light and dark the human eye tires quickly and often leads to an early end of the pleasant evening in front of the TV – this is really annoying when the story is particularly exciting! In this context, wall lights that are attached behind the television and which supply

soft zone light may provide for a remedy since this relieves the eye.
This way, disturbing reflections which might be created on the television screen by direct light are also avoided.

A softly shimmering and probably dimmed table lamp on a sideboard or a commode also provides for a pleasant background lighting. If the budget for purchasing lights is depleted, you can use some candles to create a smooth illumination that is easy on the eyes.
