In 1949, chemist Giulio Castelli establishes the Kartell company in order to process a then completely new basic material: plastics. From the beginning, Castelli relies on this universal material and mainly produces parts for the automotive industry and household items. The plastic material’s broad range of applications and its endless mouldability fascinates the founder of Kartell. He extends production to labour products and lights. Soon after, the creation of furniture sets in: The Kartell Habitat Division comes into existence and Kartell lights and furniture enthuse people from start on with their new shaping, the focus on functionality and the symbiosis between reduced design and extravagant shapes. In the 1960ies, Kartell designer lights and furniture are the embodiment of Italian living and arrangement ideas. So Kartell develops to a key company in this sector.
Kartell lights, furniture and home furnishings win many awards and design prizes. Among them, the Italian Compasso d'Oro, an important award for design products. In 1972, Kartell’s company history reaches its first climax when the New York Museum of Modern Art (MoMa) invites it to the exhibition “Italy: The New Domestic Landscape”. The company gains great international recognition. Some design lamps and fitments even obtain a persistent place in the permanent exhibition of the museum. Now, everyone knows the name Kartell. Experts appreciate the beautiful plastic lights from Italy for their innovative processing and shaping.
1988, as the new owner and president, Claudio Luti brings a breath of fresh air to the company. Luti increases the cooperation wit internationally renowned top designers such as Marcel Wanders, Patricia Urquiola and Philippe Starck. In so doing, Kartell lights and furniture get a fresh boost. Today, the lights are sold in more than 95 countries. The company maintains many branches and flagship stores all over the world. An in-house museum offers its visitors an informative tour of its company history and presents them interesting highlights. Design lights by Kartell have their own, unique style. They combine classic elements with new raw materials and a personal interpretation of the particular era. So designers of Kartell discover the seemingly endless potential of plastics and keep creating completely new lighting concepts. The material appears to be out of glass and metal, but is always plastics in fact. This special surprise effect is one of the main features of Kartell lights.
