Light fixtures for the kitchen – for an "appetising" illumination and save food preparation

Just like the dining room, the kitchen is also a room that is well frequented for many reasons. This is not only the place where the daily meals are prepared, the kitchen is also a popular meeting point for family members and friends. But beware: according to official statistics, a surprisingly high rate of accidents occurs in this room. For this reason, an appropriate illumination is indispensable in two respects: firstly, good light assists you while washing, cleaning or cutting and thereby helps to reduce the risk of accidents. Secondly, a high-quality kitchen lighting provides for a pleasant atmosphere that also stimulates the appetite. In this respect, the zone lighting is of considerable importance as it not only ensures an effective illumination of the dining table

but also of the cupboards and the shelves. The zone lighting creates cosy oases of lights wherever an impressive accentuation with focused light is desired.

The Artemide Tolomeo Sospensione Decentrata, for instance, is ideally suited for this purpose. This pendant light embodies maximum flexibility: thanks to its variably adjustable arms, its light is directed to wherever it is required. As this light fixture can be installed in a decentralised manner it also supplies the dining table in the kitchen with focused lighting, even if the table is not located directly below the ceiling outlet. The Flos Wan ceiling / wall light, a design object by Johanna Grawunder, covers another area of

application in the kitchen. It emits its direct light downwards and thereby puts the worktop, the counter or the bar in the limelight. Moreover, this glossy lacquered light source made of fine aluminium provided with soft contours serves as an elegant eye-catcher.

Small kitchens can be directly illuminated by zone lighting so that no ambient lighting is required. However, a large kitchen needs additional general lighting in order to prevent sharp contrasts between light and dark. A PH 5 pendant light by Louis Poulsen fulfils this task in an exemplary way and moreover creates a fascinating decorative highlight within the room.

Ambient lighting, zone lighting and mood lighting in the kitchen

An ambient light supplies a kitchen with basic brightness. Ideally, it illuminates the entire room, including dining table, worktop, shelves and cupboards. In order to securely avoid disturbing shadows, for instance, on a kitchen worktop or to turn a dining table into a welcoming oasis of light it is recommended to install additional zone lighting solutions. Diffused, harmonious ambient light is created by the Flos Button. The ceiling light made of opalised polycarbonate uniformly diffuses its light and thereby creates a pleasant ambience in the kitchen. Furthermore, this designer light with a nacre look also convinces as a purist home accessory that elegantly upgrades its environment. A Pirce by Artemide is also able to provide a kitchen with balanced general lighting. Thanks to the refined manufacturing process, these lights ensure an incomparably charming illumination. Moreover, these ceiling lights present themselves as extravagant eye-catchers. The third recommendation with regard to ambient lighting is the Plaff on! light. The luminaire with the hand-blown opal shade suffuses its surrounding area with pleasantly glare-free light and additionally creates an appealing light corona on the ceiling. Moreover, this light fixture by Marset convinces as an unobtrusive eye-catcher. If you want

to turn the dining table into an amicable island of light, there is no way around pendant lights. The Gubi Semi excels in this respect. The pendant lamp, hand-made from enamelled, lacquered metal, suffuses the dining area with atmospheric zone light. Thanks to its special form, two quadrants positioned back to back, it quickly becomes the central decorative element in the kitchen. The LC Shutters by Louis Poulsen creates a special atmosphere in the kitchen. The design of this pendant light is inspired by an evening walk in summer through a southern European city where you can see houses with half-closed shutters. You will receive "preserved" light if you order the Canned Light by the German cult designer Ingo Maurer. This pendant light pays tribute to a well-known series of paintings by Andy Warhol: the "Campbell's Soup Cans". This reminiscence of the world-famous tomato soup does not only look extraordinarily stylish but since it is adjustable in height it also turns out to be a pleasantly flexible table light. Last but not least, the &tradition Copenhagen needs to be mentioned in this context. The bulbous pendant light, manufactured from solid cast iron with a classic black finish, brings some retro charm into the kitchen and turns the dining table into a cosy oasis of light.

Mood lighting adds a final touch to the kitchen. Such light fixtures are not suitable to provide for general lighting or to illuminate the dining table. They rather represent the icing on the cake of the interior. The Puk Wall by the German manufacturer Top Light is such a gem. The wall light that can be individually assembled in a modular fashion emits a colourful, impressive light onto the wall thanks to its numerous filters and thereby creates an incomparable atmosphere in the kitchen. The Fil de Fer Sospensione by Catellani & Smith also improves the atmosphere in the dining room. The likable wickerwork made of aluminium wire with small halogen lamps integrated in the corpus turns into a shining sphere as soon as it is switched on. The result is a highly emotional illumination that not only creates a magical atmosphere in the kitchen. A luminaire that is reponsible for breathtaking light is the Discocó wall light. The creation by Christophe Mathieu, designed for the Spanish manufacturer Marset, catches the viewer’s eye with its floral look and the mood light that is amazingly reflected in all directions. Since it is equipped with two energy-efficient LED lamps, this extraordinary lighting solution only consumes little power.

Award-winning kitchen lights

Renowned design awards such as the Red Dot Award "crown" a light fixture and give it additional recognition. The Artemide Tolomeo Mega Terra, for instance, can claim the Red Dot Award as well as Compasso d'Oro for itself. The standard lamp can be recommended for use in the kitchen for many reasons: at first, it attracts attention with its elegant, delicate design. Then it scores points with the flexibly adjustable arms that direct the light exactly to where it is required. Thanks to its wide-ranging construction, it suffuses a dining table in the kitchen with welcoming zone lighting and thus takes over the role of a pendant light,

which probably could not be installed because there was no central ceiling outlet.
The integrated dimmer allows the light intensity to be adjusted to the personal requirements, while the characteristic rope pull system ensures stability in every position. The Athene A-6DL ceiling light and the Aplomb Sospensione LED, for instance, could win the "Light of the year" (Leuchte des Jahres) award. The latter one impresses with a concrete look that allows this light to unfold a particular, rustic charm in the kitchen. Furthermore, the purist pendant lamp suffuses the dining table with warm-white, sustainable LED light.

The Compasso d’Oro, Italian for "golden compass", has been awarded since 1954 and is known as one of the oldest and most influential international awards for industrial design. It was given, for instance, to acknowledge the Luceplan Titania. The individuality of this pendant light lies in its characteristic corrugated shape. Furthermore, it provides for a special lighting experience: laterally inserted colour filters create green, yellow, blue or purple light in the kitchen, while the central part emits warm-white light downwards and thereby skilfully highlights the dining table.
