To produce the paper shades of the designer lamps, different processes are used. These depend, among other things, on the type of paper. Particularly high-quality products are made by hand. This applies, for example, to Washi paper. This is handmade translucent paper from Japan, which has a smooth and a rough side. Japanese paper is made from bast fibers of low woody plants, which are cut at the beginning of winter. The manufacturing process is approximately as follows:
- The branches are removed and bundled. Then the bark is loosened with the use of steam and stripped with knives.
- The bark bast is boiled in wood ash liquor, watered, and then beaten with woods so that a fiber pulp is formed.
- The fiber pulp is boiled with clear water and, if necessary, with the addition of plant mucilage.
- The substance is scooped with a bamboo sieve and placed on a pile as a sheet of paper.
- Moisture is removed by light pressing, then each paper sheet is hung on the wall and brushed.
Traditional Japanese paper lanterns in lampion design are made of
rice paper
. This is obtained from straw, which remains after the rice harvest. For this purpose, the fibers of the straw are broken up and then boiled to a pulp, from which the paper is subsequently scooped. To make the paper more robust later, cellulose fibers are usually added.Some lamps are characterized by a shade made of
parchment paper
. This is a cellulose paper that is made greaseproof and wet-strengthened with the help of chemicals. The process is approximately as follows:- The pulp fibers are ground, creating greaseproofness.
- The pulp is converted into paper and treated with sulfuric acid. This is necessary to achieve one hundred percent greaseproofness.
