In the study, we usually spend several hours at a time, often from morning to evening. The right lighting helps us to work in a permanently concentrated and productive manner and also to remain efficient over a longer period of time.

The combination of room and zone lighting is particularly important here. Diffuse or indirect room lighting provided by ceiling luminaires, LED panels or uplights creates good general lighting and compensates for strong differences in brightness. Direct, well glare-free zone lighting at the workplace, on the other hand, ensures perfect visibility for reading, writing, drawing and the like. Ideally, the table, floor or wall luminaires are adjustable so that you can direct the light as required.

Important, especially for desk lighting, is a very good to brilliant color rendering. This makes colors appear as natural as possible in the light. The color of the light also plays a major role. This should be quite cool, which has an activating effect on the human body.

Various applications for study lamps

Desk lighting is the be-all and end-all in the home office. If the light falls directly on the work surface and is glare-free, you benefit from optimal visibility when reading and writing.

In addition to zone lighting at the desk, room lighting is essential. This creates a good basic brightness level in the study and thus avoids light-dark contrasts that are unpleasant for the eye.

If there are cabinets or shelves with books, files or similar items in your study, cabinet lighting is recommended.

Different types of lamps for the study

Depending on what you want to use your study lamp for, different types of lamps are recommended. Ceiling lamps provide you with pleasant ambient light as well as floor lamps with diffuse or indirect light. Adjustable floor lamps with zone lighting, on the other hand, are ideal for desk lighting.

Pendant luminaires with downward light illuminate your workplace above the desk, while models with uplight provide indirect ambient light. The same applies to wall luminaires with upward light. Wall lamps with steerable zone light, on the other hand, offer themselves as space-saving desk lighting.

LED luminaires are primarily associated with energy-efficient lighting. However, this is only one of many advantages of modern lighting solutions. For example, the study lamps are available with different light colors, from warm white to daylight white. With some lights, you can also adjust the light color to suit your particular needs.

Many of our LED lights for the home office are characterized by very good or brilliant color rendering. This is especially important for drawing and painting work.

Sophisticated lighting solutions for the workplace

Sometimes, particularly sophisticated lighting solutions are needed in the home office to meet all needs. For example, desk lights with articulated arms are ideal for directable light where you need it.

If you opt for a pendant light in your study, you can stay flexible with a height-adjustable model. Whether your ceilings are high or low, adjust the pendant height as you see fit and readjust whenever needed.

A practical and at the same time stylish 2-in-1 solution are floor lamps with uplight. They emit their light upwards as well as downwards, making them ideal for zone and room lighting next to your desk.

Which lamps are suitable for the study?

For balanced and optimal lighting in the home office, you should always rely on several, well-distributed luminaires in the room and combine room and zone lighting. At the workplace, an adjustable desk lamp with an articulated arm is recommended so that you can direct the light specifically to the desired area. In addition to table lamps, space-saving clamp luminaires can also perform this task. Floor lamps or wall luminaires are also suitable for this purpose.

In the study, ceiling luminaires, LED panels or uplights provide ambient light. The latter provide indirect, glare-free room lighting. You can create supplementary zone lighting with spotlights and spots, which you can use to illuminate cabinets or shelves in the home office, for example.

Dimmable workroom lamps or luminaires with adjustable light color also allow flexible adaptation of the lighting. For example, neutral white light (above 3,000 Kelvin) or daylight white light (from 5,000 Kelvin) with a high blue component is recommended for concentrated work. This has an activating effect on the human body and promotes concentration. Warm white light, on the other hand, is a good choice in the evening when you want to relax and read a book.

How many lumens do I need for study lighting?

For desk lighting, we recommend at least 400 to 500 lumens. For larger desks and multiple screens, the luminous flux, or lumen count, should be higher. For room lighting in the study, aim for 1,000 lumens upward. You can find more detailed recommendations for the luminous flux for room lighting in our table.

More meaningful than the luminous flux is the illuminance. It is given in lux and reveals how many lumens fall on a specific area (lux = lumens per square meter). According to DIN EN 12464-1, the illuminance at public office workplaces with screens must be at least 500 lux. You can use this as a guideline for your home office if necessary.

What do I need to pay attention to for glare-free lighting in the study?

To protect the eyes, glare-free light is the basis for good lighting in the study. It is important that no direct view into the light source is possible while working. In the case of desk lamps, this can be achieved with opaque shades, for example. In addition, you should position table lamps so that you do not look into the light source from below.

Speaking of position: to avoid shadows cast by your hands, it is important to place the lamp on the right side. Right-handers place the desk lamp on the left side, left-handers position it on the right.

You can obtain glare-free room lighting either by using luminaires with a cover or by using indirect room lighting. For this purpose, for example, uplights are suitable, whose light is reflected from the ceiling.
