Dimmable table lamps for an atmospheric ambience

When you choose a dimmable table lamp, you can adjust the brightness individually – depending on your needs and application. For example, set bright light for reading and dim it in the evening for a cozy atmosphere to relax.

The operation is different: some table lamps integrate a touch dimmer, others are equipped with a sliding, rotary or tilt dimmer. Some table lamps you dim intuitively by gesture control, others you control with a remote control, your smartphone or tablet.

How many watts should my table lamp have?

In the age of LEDs, instead of the wattage, you should rather consider the luminous flux, specified in lumens. This describes the total light output of a light source. How many lumens your table lamp should have depends on various factors such as the direction of light, light distribution and the purpose your table lamp serves.

Reading light, for example, should have a higher luminous flux than mood lighting. For the latter, up to 300 lumens is recommended. Table lamps that provide reading light should have at least 500 lumens. For desk luminaires, the luminous flux can be somewhat higher. At office workplaces, 700 lumens upwards are a good orientation to achieve the legally prescribed 500 lux (lumens per square meter).

In any case, however, you should make sure that reading and desk lamps provide directional, glare-free light that you can direct at best.

Tip: You can retain flexibility in terms of brightness with dimmable table lamps.

Which bulb is right for my table lamp?

Once you have decided on a table lamp with a socket, for example E14 or E27, you need to choose a suitable bulb, if none is supplied. We generally recommend LED bulbs, as they are unbeatable in terms of energy efficiency and longevity. You should choose the illuminant carefully, as it can significantly influence the lighting effect.

If your table lamp has a translucent shade, it is best to choose an illuminant with a matte coating. This prevents unsightly shadows from forming on the lampshade. For lamps without a shade or with clear, smoky or colored diffusers, we recommend

gold-coated

clear bulbs

. This makes for great lighting effects.

Do you like dimmed light? Then you should make sure that LED bulbs are dimmable. You can find information on this on the respective product page of the illuminant. You can dim the light of table lamps with dim-to-warm technology in a particularly atmospheric way. Thanks to this innovative technology, the light shines not only darker but also warmer when dimmed down.

For mood lighting or cozy light for evening reading, we recommend an illuminant with a warm white light color. For concentrated work at the desk, on the other hand, cooler neutral white or daylight white is more suitable.

Especially if you use your table lamp at the workplace, the color rendering of the illuminant plays a major role. To ensure that colors of illuminated surfaces and objects are reproduced as naturally as possible, the light source should have a color rendering index of at least Ra=90.

When is it recommended to use a table lamp without a cable?

A table lamp without a cable is practical if you want to use your lamp flexibly and not be tied to a fixed location. Because with a battery lamp you are independent of electricity – provided that the battery is charged – and can enjoy good light even where there is no socket nearby.

If you want to take your table lamp to the balcony or terrace, pay attention to the IP protection class. If the lamp is not at least splash-proof (IPX4), only use it outside in good weather and do not expose it to rain. Outdoor table lamps with rechargeable battery, on the other hand, you can use in the garden without any problems or even take them camping.
