Discover pendant lights for your dining table

One of the most popular applications for pendant lamps is the table, especially the dining table. Elegant designer pendant lamps that direct their light downwards with as little glare as possible are recommended for the latter. As a result, they act as an eye-catcher and at the same time bathe the table, including food, drinks and table decorations, in a cosy light.

If the pendant light is also positioned at a height of 60 to 80 cm above the table, unpleasant glare caused by looking directly into the light source is prevented as far as possible.

Which light sources are suitable for pendant luminaires?

When purchasing the light source, you should first make sure that the base is compatible with the socket of your pendant lamp. There is also the question of the beam angle. Reflector lamps with a narrow beam angle are recommended for precise zone lighting. With general-purpose lamps, on the other hand, you get almost all-round light, provided it is not shielded from above by the lampshade.

Different light sources are recommended depending on the type of luminaire. For pendant lights with a translucent shade, matt light sources are the right choice to avoid glare. If the light source of the pendant light is exposed, we recommend clear, gold or smoke-coated filament lamps. The latter achieve an additional appealing visual effect. Of course, this does not only apply to pendant luminaires.

The shape of the light source should also match the pendant light. The best way to do this is to follow our light source recommendations. On our product pages, we offer you the option of selecting a suitable light source for the respective luminaire. We generally recommend modern LED light sources. This is because with LEDs you save a lot of energy and benefit from a long service life.

How do I shorten a pendant light?

You can detach and shorten the cable of a pendant light either at the socket or at the canopy. As this varies depending on the light, you should find out in advance whether the cables can be shortened to avoid irreparable damage. You will find information on how to shorten the pendant on the respective product pages.

We recommend that you contact a qualified electrician to shorten the cable. It is important that work on the power cable is only carried out when it is de-energised.

What are the advantages of pendant luminaires that emit light upwards and downwards?

Pendant luminaires with uplight and downlight combine downward-directed zone light with upward-directed indirect ambient light. If you hang such a pendant light above your dining or coffee table, you can set the scene with light on the one hand and enjoy cosy, glare-free room lighting on the other.

If the two light components can be controlled separately, you can conveniently switch between zone and room lighting or set both light directions simultaneously.

Which pendant lights do not dazzle?

Good glare control is the be-all and end-all of lighting. The general rule is:

The further back the light source is set in a shade or diffuser, the lower the glare.
Luminaires with opaque shades cause less glare than those that let light through.
A diffuse or opal cover ensures better glare control.

Indirect light that shines upwards or via a reflector is usually not dazzling at all. However, pendant luminaires with indirect light are only suitable for room lighting and not for dining table lighting.

In addition to the luminaire itself, its alignment and the installed height also play a fundamental role. If the light hangs too high, it can cause glare, even if you have followed our tips above. If you want to hang your pendant light above the dining table, there should be approx. 60 to 70 cm of free space between the light and the table surface.
