The brightness required of light depends on the purpose of the luminaire. If you use it as a reading lamp, we recommend at least 500 lumens. If your floor lamp shall supply you with room light, you can follow the general rule of 100 lumens per square meter. A living room with a space of 20 m² thus needs a lamp with 2.000 lumens. Are you rather in search for a cozy atmosphere? In that case, an ambient light with less than 400 lumens, shedding light without being too bright, is a good choice. Or think about a dimmable variant as an alternative.

How many lumens should my floor lamp have?
Which floor lamp is suitable for a dining table?
In the dining room, a floor lamp can be an interesting alternative solution, compared to the usual pendant light. If you like this option, you best pick an arc lamp. Thanks to its large swing range, you can position it so that the lamp head is hovering above the center of the dining table. Thereby you make sure to provide for well-oriented lighting.
Can I use my floor lamp like a desk lamp?
It is generally possible to substitute a table lamp with a floor lamp in order to illuminate your desk. Make sure that it is adjusted correctly and that it meets certain criteria: Good vision and concentrated work are favored by a luminaire with a light color of at least 3.000 Kelvin. If you prefer daylight white, you will need more than 5.300 Kelvin.
Moreover, your light should have enough lumens. We recommend our floor lamps with more than 5.000 lumens. They are relatively high, so they can light your desk easily. Some of these luminaires feature not only direct, but also indirect light. Accordingly, you obtain zone lighting focused on your work desk, and in addition a certain amount of room light. This combination releases strain on the eyes and prevents them from quickly becoming tired. For a prolonged activity at your desk, this is a great advantage.
Another good choice: lamps with a head that is positioned directly above your work surface and which you can adjust, for example by using an articulated or flexible arm. Left-handers should place the standard lamp at the right side of the table, right-handers accordingly at the left side.
Where should I place my floor lamp?
The right place for your floor lamp depends on the application you need it for. Luminaires for dining tables or desks should always be positioned in a way to illuminate the table surface. A reading light is best placed next to an armchair or a bed. If you are looking for bright zone lighting, maybe for a living-room suite, put up an adjustable floor lamp next to a sofa and aim the lamp head at the upholstery. Our advice: Make sure that the control device is always easy to access. Then you can switch on and off your lamp without having to get up.
