Walkways can often stay dark until someone uses them. In this case, path lights with motion detectors are extremely beneficial. How many lumens do you recommend for path lights?
Path lights should provide enough light for you to easily find your way in the dark. For path lights on private property, we recommend opting for 300 to 600 lumens. Ideally, path lights should direct their light directly onto the path.
You will also need to space out the lights properly. In addition, the amount of reflection in the area plays an important role in choosing the right lights: bright surfaces are usually more reflective than darker ones. As a result, they reflect light better and appear brighter. Rule of thumb: the darker the area, the more light that is needed.
Which water resistance rating is best?
For path lights in protected areas (e.g., under awnings), a protection rating of IPX4 is usually sufficient. Lights with this protection rating are splash-proof and therefore safe in rain. For path lights out in the open, we recommend a protection rating of IPX5 or higher. Choose outdoor lights with one of the following IP codes: IP55, IP65, IP66, IP67, or IP68.
Important: Connections such as sockets and cables must also be equipped with the required level of protection. Since water regularly builds up in the ground, IPX7 or IPX8 protection is required for cables and junction boxes laid underground. This will protect the components from temporary or prolonged flooding.
Are there other important criteria I should take into consideration?
In addition to water and reflection, other factors can have an impact on your pathway lighting. In particular, these include:
- Height: The height of your path lights will differ depending on the intended use. For outdoor footpaths, we recommend lights with a height of 50 to 120 cm (approx. 20 to 50 inches). For driveways, a height of 120 to 150 cm (approx. 50 to 60 inches) is more suitable.
- Cables: Cables should be fully buried underground to prevent the risk of tripping and keep the area nice and tidy.
- Weatherability: Since path lights are exposed to both good and bad weather, it’s better to go with premium materials that are robust and durable. In particular, we recommend lights made of stainless steel and finished with high-quality paints or varnishes.
How far apart should my path lights be?
Your path lights should be positioned in such a way that the dark areas between the lights remain relatively small. Depending on the height of the lights and their beam angles, different distances can apply.
For high bollard lights made with premium lighting technology, a distance of approx. 4 to 5 m (12 to 15 ft) is recommended. In general, the lower the path lights, the shorter this distance becomes. For lights mounted high up on a wall or the facade of a house, a distance of up to 10 m (30 ft) is possible.
The full width of stairs should always be illuminated. In particular, the top and bottom stairs should be perfectly lit.
How do I install my path lights?
It all depends on your lights and the respective path or surface. Path lights with spiked ends are inserted directly into the ground. These lights are quick and easy to install, and can be moved as needed. On the other hand, path lights with screw-on bases must be attached to a solid foundation (such as concrete). Lights with anchoring units can be mounted without a base. Simply dig a hole in the ground, insert the anchor, and refill the hole with dirt.
Most path lights are connected to a power supply by means of an underground cable. However, some path lights (mostly bollard and pedestal) also come with plugs. This is especially true for lights with spiked ends.
