The works by de Lucchi are based on innovative designs which always also pay tribute to the artistic aspect of industrial design. He likes to break with existing conventions and provides his own visionary ideas. In 1973, while he was a student, de Lucchi dressed up as Napoleonic general and protested in front of the Milan Triennale against too many redundant products. Michele de Lucchi is a founding member of the influential Memphis Group around the Austrian-Italian designer Ettore Sottsass. The Memphis Group, founded in 1980, was determined to break the existing rules of functionalism and to provide for innovation by means of playful and fanciful designs. The clients’ claim to be the sole party that determines the design of a product displeased de Lucchi. His thought: the classical industrial design that is predominately based on the functionality of a product should be enriched by individual, artistic impulses. This resulted in the unmistakable designs created by the Memphis Group, which attracted worldwide attention back then and were presented in numerous magazines and museums.
Artemide Tolomeo – a modern classic
One of the best-known designs by Michele de Lucchi is the Tolomeo light, which he created together with Giancarlo Fassina for the Italian high-class manufacturer Artemide in 1987. By means of the Tolomeo Tavolo
, de Lucchi created an optimally glare-free lighting solution for workplaces and desks. Thanks to a sophisticated rope pull system, the arms of the Tolomeo can be adjusted to suit your requirements. Since its introduction to the public the unobtrusive design of the Tolomeo was practically showered with awards. The elegant table lamp rightly secured its status as a real design classic. Already in 1987, the design of the Tolomeo considered the requirements for environment-friendly product design. Due to its reduced need for materials, the Tolomeo is manufactured using a minimum amount of materials. Nevertheless, the light is very solid and has a long service life. The easy disassembly into individual components as well as the possibility of recycling round off the environmental properties of the light classic. Besides the Tolomeo Tavolo, a number of further lights is available from the Tolomeo range. The Tolomeo Parete
is an elegant wall light, the Tolomeo Sospensione
extends the Tolomeo range by elegant pendant lights. The Tolomeo Terra adds a stylish floor lamp to your home. The traditional Tolomeo Tavolo is also available in various versions. In addition to different sizes, there also different model available that are operated with energy-saving lamps, for instance, the Tolomeo Tavolo LED
Spectacular light designs
In addition to the Tolomeo range, de Lucchi designed a number of other spectacular light designs for Artemide. The unique Dioscuri light, for instance, has a characteristic spherical shape. If it is used as a table lamp, a wall light or a ceiling light, this light fixture diffuses its light particularly uniformly within the room. The luminaire body made from hand-blown glass give the spherical-shaped light this special something. The Castore series
impresses with its rounded shape. The hand-blown luminaire body is attached to a translucent lamp pole, whose upper edge is unobtrusively illuminated. The innovative design by de Lucchi can be particularly well seen from the Logico range
by Artemide. The fancifully created light shades made from hand-blown glass give the exclusive light a distinctive look.
