As an alternative to classic ceiling lamps, you might consider spotlights that can be flexibly adjusted and thus also serve to illuminate specific areas or objects. Especially for living rooms with high ceilings, pendant lights are a nice alternative to ceiling lamps. If you want to use them for room lighting, choose hanging lamps that diffuse their light into the room with good glare control. Above the coffee table, a pendant lamp with light directed upwards and downwards equally will provide direct zone and indirect room lighting.

Which kind of living room ceiling lamps are modern?

Modern living room ceiling lamps are characterized by minimalist designs. Round or angular forms as well as often filigree shapes and noble materials such as glass or metal are recurrent features. Typical colors are black, white and silver. Many modern ceiling lights for the living room also integrate efficient LED technology or are equipped with innovative control options.

Which ceiling lamp is recommended for a small and which for a large living room?

When choosing a suitable ceiling lamp for your living room, the luminous flux, specified in lumens, plays a major role. After all, in both small and large living rooms, sufficient light is essential. However, this is not the sole task of a single ceiling lamp. Rather, it should be your goal to create balanced lighting throughout the room by combining room and zone lighting.

For general lighting in the living room, we recommend at least 1,000 lumens. The larger the living room, the more lumens your total room light should have. Our room light table gives you a good orientation for the right lumen package. It tells you how many lumens you need per square meter for your living room and other rooms.

Please note that the values refer to room lighting taken as a whole. So, when choosing several ceiling lights or combining a ceiling lamp and an uplight for room lighting, all lights together should add up to the recommended lumen value.

Which ceiling lamp is suitable for living rooms with low or high ceilings?

As a general rule, we recommend that you pay attention to manage a passage height of at least 210 cm. Therefore, for low rooms, it makes sense to choose lights that do not protrude far into the room. In addition to flat ceiling lamps,

LED panels

or – in the case of suspended ceilings – recessed luminaires are a good solution.

In high rooms, as in older buildings, and if it suits the room conditions, you can install designer lights that protrude deeper into the room, adding depth to the space above the head. Other options in living rooms with high ceilings are pendant lights or chandeliers.
