Zone lighting for cupboards & shelves – effective illumination of the furniture

Cupboards and shelves are constant and vital pieces of living room furniture.

is not suitable to effectively highlight these pieces of furniture. A mood light which only shimmers softly is also not able to underline them across a large area – this is the responsibility of zone lighting. Zone lighting virtually presents a cupboard or a shelf in the right light by suffusing the furniture item with atmospheric light. Spotlights and clip-on lights master the art of highlighting, however, ceiling lights, floor lamps and wall lights are also a good solution

for this task in the living room. Flexible spotlights offer individually adjustable light in order to underline the structure of a cupboard or a shelf and thus to emphasise their plasticity and to finally give it a significant meaning. Furthermore, the spotlights in this online shop, which are creations by talented designers, serve as an eye-catcher that adds a special touch to the room. The advantage of clip-on lights is that they can illuminate defined areas without a complex prior installation process being necessary – a clip-on light is simply

plugged into a power socket and clamped on a base. They can be virtually used anywhere, you simply need a base to attach it. They are very popular on cupboards and shelves because they create a charmingly illuminated stage for decorative objects or books. Frequently, an adjustable track and cable system is used to effectively put a cupboard or a shelf in the living room in the limelight. For this purpose, we particularly recommend the products offered by Bruck.

Zone lighting highlights for cupboards & shelves

The Wittenberg ceiling light is a spotlight that at first impresses with its pleasantly unobtrusive look. This light by the German manufacturer Mawa also stands out due to its excellent functionality. The purist designer light, a creation by Jan Dinnebier, is available as a solo artist but also as a multiple-lamp version and thereby offers flexibility par excellence: since it can be rotated by 355° and swivelled by 90, this spotlight provides for bright conditions wherever a zone lighting in the living room is required. Furthermore, the Wittenberg scores points with its formidable luminous efficacy and an authentic colour rendering index with the ideal value of Ra=100. Those who opt for the Fabbian Cubetto spotlight will receive cubic futurism. The "small cube" – in Italian “Cubetto” – harmonises the seeming contrast between the transparent, square-shaped housing and the round diffuser and thereby turns into an interesting eye-catcher. Since it can also be swivelled and be attached to the wall and the ceiling, it is an ideal solution when it comes to accentuating a cupboard or a shelf. Those who enjoy extraordinary design, will definitely love

the Absolut WCF. This light impresses with a special suspension that makes use of a sophisticated rubber O-ring. It can be rotated and swivelled in any direction to provide for warm-white illumination. This means that the ceiling light by Absolut Lighting can be turned in the direction of a cupboard or a shelf in one single movement. The creation by Michael Rösing is available as one-lamp, two-lamp or three-lamp version.

Zone lighting: upon request, detachable and with warm-white LED light
The clip-on light category also includes a wide range of light solutions. For instance, the Swiss provider Belux offers the U-Turn designer light that can be attached in the preferred direction thanks to a magnetic ball-and-socket joint. It is possible to detach the light head, to turn it around and to attach it again so that its warm-white LED light can either be used directly or indirectly (via the wall). Even more: by simply turning the light you can adjust the emission angle so that a small or a large area can be illuminated, as desired. And since it is equipped with modern LEDs,

this light only requires 13 watts to produce a light output of 1,150 lumens – which almost corresponds to the light intensity achieved by a 100 W incandescent lamp. The high-class brand Artemide also contributes a flexible clip-on light that allows an easy individual illumination of paintings, cupboards and shelves in the living room. The Tolomeo Pinza, which received several renowned awards, impresses with its light head that can be swivelled in all directions and thus provides for focused lighting wherever it is required. The special feature: by means of a small aperture it also makes a small but pleasant contribution to ambient lighting. Cassina Lighting presents the Projecteur 165 as another clip-on light. This piece can be swivelled and was penned by the all-rounder Le Corbusier; it emits its light through an opal white diffuser and thereby creates a soft, pleasantly glare-free light in the desired direction.

Zone lighting combined with ambient lighting and mood lighting

A zone light for a cupboard or a shelf underlines the special value that the owner assigns to this home accessory. It particularly emphasises this part of the interior in the living room by treating the selected piece with an accentuating light bath. However, zone lighting for cupboards and shelves can only be one part of the overall illumination in this room that is used in such a versatile way as hardly any other room. Only ambient and mood lighting round off a perfect light landscape. Ambient lighting ensures a uniform general illumination, it supplies the living room with basic brightness. In many cases this can be performed by ceiling lights or pendant lights. However, an uplighter is also a good option. It emits its light upwards where it is reflected by the ceiling and then passes it on into the living room as a glare-free, soft ambient light. The Cadmo understands how to masterly perform this task. This piece by star designer Karim Rashid also provides for soft ambient lighting in the living room with light that was reflected by the ceiling. Thanks to two lamps located inside that can be switched on/off and dimmed independently of each other, it also offers the possibility to adjust the illumination to suit the individual needs. The Artemide light additionally serves as an exclusive design object that tells its own genesis with its look that reminds us of a coat with a collar. The Toio by Flos adds a touch of irony to the living room. The likeable light uses car headlights as reflector. It is a classic from the 1960s that was created by designer legend Achille Castiglioni and it produces variable ambient lighting as it can be adjusted in height.

The combination of a decorative highlight and room-filling illumination is represented in the Museum of Modern Art (MoMa) in New York.

Zone lighting next to an armchair or a sofa

A further supplement is recommended for the armchair or the sofa. This is the place where you make yourself comfortable to read a good book, the daily newspaper or an interesting magazine. An adjustable table lamp on the side table provides for assistance with light that can be individually aligned. The ultimate reading light is the Artemide Tolomeo Lettura LED. Thanks to its adjustable arms and the light head that can be rotated and swivelled, it ensures illumination wherever it is required. Moreover, its delicate appearance makes it a distinguished highlight within a room that attracts all the attention. Being a refuge of cosiness, the living room also serves as the meeting point for relaxing movie nights. Unfortunately, many people still think that a completely dark room ensures a perfect movie night. However, this only results in quickly tiring eyes and soon somebody says something like "Honey, let’s watch the movie tomorrow…". This situation can be prevented by means of a wall light that supplies the area behind the TV with backlighting. A light such as the Hope Parete by Luceplan, the Reef Wall by the German manufacturer Serien Lighting or the Dutch Cubo wall light by Philips produce zone lighting behind the TV and thereby compensate for too sharp contrasts between light and dark that

put excessive stain on the eyes and thus might finally ruin an evening in front of the television.

Mood lighting rounding off the atmosphere

Ambient lighting provides for a “dash of light” that adds the final touch to the overall illumination. It hardly makes any contribution to the illumination of the room but rather accentuates some pieces of the living room furniture. It can be placed on the sideboard, the commode as well as on the floor or the window sill. The Curl Tavolo is considered as one of the most popular pieces of this kind. The designer light with the curved silhouette and a dynamic shape conveys an impression of lightness. In this case, the light source by Luceplan practically illuminates itself and thereby creates indirect, smooth mood lighting. By simply turning the diffuser, the light emitted can be adjusted from warm-white 2,400 Kelvin to rather neutral 3,500 Kelvin. The Marset La Discrète represents a successful combination of an area for depositing items and an unobtrusive feel-good lighting. The table lamp made of natural oak provides a charming stage e.g. for books on a sideboard or a commode.
