Reading, watching TV, playing games or simply sitting together in a cosy atmosphere: There is no room in the home that we use as much as the living room. The lighting should be correspondingly multifaceted. A single ceiling light is not enough for this. Instead, you should rely on three lighting components: Room lighting, zone lighting and mood lighting.

Room lighting creates a basic brightness in the room and provides general orientation, while zone lighting illuminates specific areas in the room. Mood lighting, on the other hand, illuminates without really illuminating, creating a cosy ambience.

For cosy lighting in the living room, for example, a dimmable ceiling lamp provides soft ambient lighting. In addition, a reading lamp next to the sofa or armchair provides glare-free light for reading. A table lamp with diffused light, on the other hand, provides an extra dose of cosiness.

Room lighting for basic brightness

Room lighting

Room lighting ensures general brightness in the living room and helps with orientation. Balanced room lighting prevents your eyes from tiring quickly as they are not exposed to strong contrasts between light and dark.

Even lighting is created by wall or ceiling lamps, for example, which distribute their light evenly throughout the room or radiate it to all sides. Floor lamps with upward and downward light and ceiling washlights that provide cosy indirect light are also suitable for room lighting.

Which light is the right one for a large living room?

Basically, the same applies to the lighting of large living rooms as to all living rooms: you should combine ambient and zone lighting and also work with mood lighting.

Especially when it comes to room lighting, for example with uplighters, it makes sense to use several lights. This allows you to achieve uniform lighting even in very large rooms.

If you opt for a ceiling light, make sure that sufficient light falls into all areas of the living room. You can achieve this with spotlight strips, for example, whose spotlights can be individually aligned. An equally good option is to use a large number of spotlights that can be mounted evenly on the ceiling. Ceiling lights with a large diffuser that spreads the light in all directions are also suitable as living room lamps for spacious rooms.

How many watts should my living room lamp have?

In the age of LEDs, the decisive factor for the brightness of your light is no longer the wattage, but the luminous flux, expressed in lumens. To give you an idea: a conventional 60-watt light bulb produces a light output of approx. 710 lumens. An LED light source with the same luminous flux consumes just 8 to 10 watts.

The ideal brightness of your living room lamps depends, among other things, on whether you are providing ambient, zone or mood lighting. When it comes to room lighting, it also depends on whether you opt for direct or indirect light and whether the room is light or dark. For example, if you want to illuminate a bright living room with direct light, we recommend approx. 40 to 80 lumens per square metre. Direct light in darker rooms should have a slightly higher luminous flux. Here you should aim for approx. 60 to 120 lumens per square metre. If you are using a combination of direct and indirect lighting in a bright living room, 50 to 100 lumens per square metre is a good guideline.

How brightly living room lamps with zone light should shine depends on which area you want to illuminate. For lighting the coffee table, luminaires with 750 to 1500 lumens are a good choice. For reading lights, we recommend 500 to 1250 lumens. For window sill and sideboard lights and for television lighting, we recommend 250 to 1000 lumens.

Mood lighting should always shine less brightly to avoid strong contrasts. Living room lights with 100 to 750 lumens are suitable.

Tip: It is best to choose a dimmable light and adjust the brightness to suit your mood.
