How high should a pendant light hang above the kitchen island?

When you install a pendant light above your kitchen island, it should hang high enough so that you don't bump into it while cooking. We recommend a distance of about 80 to 100 cm between the countertop and the bottom edge of the light fixture.

In addition to height, positioning is also important. The pendant luminaire should be placed as centrally as possible above the cooking island, but always in such a way that you do not bump into the lamp when handling pots and pans or leaning over the worktop. Ideally, the light should fall on the kitchen island from an angle above. This way, you won't take the light away from yourself while cooking.

Last but not least, go for pendant lights with sturdy materials if you're installing them above a cooktop. This way, the kitchen pendant lights will be impervious to fumes or avoidable grease splatters.

How do I light a kitchen without wall cabinets?

If there are no wall cabinets in your kitchen, this can be a great advantage for lighting: That's because it gives you the option of installing ceiling, pendant and wall lights centrally above the countertop. For even lighting, we recommend one luminaire per 1.5 - 2 m² of work surface. In any case, it is important that the zone light falls on the work surface in the kitchen without glare or shadows.

With pendant lights, as described above, make sure they are the right height so you don't bump your head while cooking. Also, if you're mounting the lamp above a countertop without wall cabinets, refrain from adding hooks, magnetic strips or anything similar to the wall behind it. In general, we advise you to go for narrow kitchen hanging lamps with a small diameter.

How do I light a kitchen island with an exhaust hood?

Since a cooker hood usually provides light itself, good lighting above the hob is already provided. For the rest of the kitchen island lighting, rely on other light sources that you can install next to the cooker hood, for example. For this purpose, under-cabinet luminaires are just as suitable as recessed spotlights. If no wall units are installed next to the cooker hood, pendant or wall luminaires are also suitable.

Whichever luminaires you choose: Make sure the kitchen lamps are evenly distributed and provide enough bright light for cutting, frying, garnishing and the like.
