Joan Gaspar – an artist with strong ties to the manufacturerr

Born in Barcelona in 1966, the Spanish designer Joan Gaspar, one of the most talented minds in the Spanish creative industry, is considered to be among the most important contributors of Marset. He designs lights that are supposed to outlive fashions and trends and to represent something of permanent value. His motto is: "Good design needs to be well thought-out and should be functioning smoothly. If it additionally looks good – all the better!" Before taking over the position as Art Director at Marset Iluminación in 1996 and designing modern classics such as the Polo lights, Joan Gaspar gained his initial experience working for the light company Vapor from 1988 to 1992. Prior to this, he studied at the School of Arts and Crafts in Barcelona. During his professional life, he collaborated with various well-known companies such as Santa & Cole, B-Lux and Sellex. Moreover, he lectures at the two design schools in Barcelona, Elisava and Eina.

About his collaboration with Marset Joan Gaspar says: "The closer the collaboration, the better the quality of the result achieved in the end. Designers profit enormously if they are informed about all the details of the corporate strategy. They are only properly initiated if they have a close and long-standing relationship with the company." The collaboration with Marset seems to be very close since he designed a lot of luminaires for the traditional company: whether table lamps, pendant lights or wall lights, Joan Gaspar is responsible for some expressive works that significantly contributed to the success of Marset.

Further Marset bestsellers by Joan Gaspar

Joan Gaspar, for instance, created the extremely popular Plaff-on! light: a wall light made from high-quality aluminium and hand-blown opal glass, which stands out due to its compact shape and not only provides for a soft illumination in the hall. The larger Plaff-on! 50 ensures an extensive, soft basic brightness in the dining area. The Marset Cala Indoor floor lamp symbolises Marset’s claim to combine originality with premium quality. With its foldable frame made from genuine oak wood the floor lamp looks like a classic easel from an artist’s studio. Additionally, this creation catches the viewer’s eyes thanks to an interesting contrast. This contrast is created by the cylindrical, white polyethylene shade and the streamlined, rustic frame. Despite the contrasting geometries of the components, the Marset Cala embodies a coherent and harmonious overall structure. Thanks to the wooden part, it particularly cuts a fine figure in rooms where the interior furnishing already includes some wooden features – for instance, in a classically designed living room. In environments in which this natural component is not available, it stands out as a decorative unique feature.
