Table lamps

The classic desk lamp is the table lamp, which you place on the tabletop. A space-saving alternative to the table lamp is the clamp lamp, which you attach directly to the desk. You can save even more space on the table with wall lamps, which you attach above the workplace. Are you looking for a mobile light that you can use at your desk during the day and at your nightstand in the evening? If so, a battery-powered light is a great option. LED luminaires with different light color and color rendering

With the right light color or color temperature, specified in Kelvin (K), you can increase your ability to concentrate. For this purpose, cooler light with a high blue content from approx. 4,000 K is recommended, which has an activating and concentration-promoting effect on us. For relaxed reading in the evening, luminaires with a pleasant warm white color with a maximum of 3,000 K are more suitable. Very good color rendering is also of crucial importance. Full spectrum lamps have a CRI value of 95 or higher, which means that the colors of illuminated surfaces or objects are reproduced almost true to life.

Control options for desk lamps

The operation is a decisive factor in choosing the right desk lamp. Are you looking for a dimmable lamp where you can regulate the light intensity? Then choose a desk lamp with an integrated dimmer. Do you like old-fashioned control techniques, we recommend lights with switches. On the other hand, if you are a fan of smart lighting, choose smart home desk lamps that you can control with your smartphone or tablet.

What should I look for in a desk lamp?

The be-all and end-all of desk lighting is good glare control. You should not have a direct view of the light source when working. Luminaires with lampshades are recommended here, for example. The luminaire should illuminate the desk evenly so that there are no strong light-dark contrasts. Ergonomics also play a major role in desk lighting. Adjustable luminaires with adjustable shades and/or articulated arms are ideal, allowing you to direct the light to your liking. A luminaire that can be operated from a seated position makes for more efficient and comfortable work. Models with a pushbutton or dimmer directly on the desk lamp or variants that you can operate using gesture control or smartphone are practical.

The right illuminance and balanced light-dark contrasts contribute to very good lighting quality. Light color and color rendering are also of great importance. The latter especially if you primarily draw or paint at your desk. We recommend a lamp with a CRI value of at least 90 or better 95. Then colors of illuminated objects or surfaces are authentically reproduced.

Important: A lamp for the desk alone is not enough for optimal lighting in the study. In addition to zone lighting, you also need room lighting to ensure uniform basic brightness in the room. In this way, you avoid strong brightness contrasts, which means that the eye has to strain less.

How bright should my desk lamp be?

Sufficiently bright light is an essential prerequisite for pleasant and concentrated work. How high the luminous flux, specified in lumens, should be depends on various factors. Essentially, it depends on the light characteristics of the desk luminaire, for example the light distribution, as well as the size of the desk and, if necessary, the reflection levels of the walls and furniture.

Basically, we recommend luminaires with at least 400 to 500 lumens for your desk. The larger your workplace, the higher the luminous flux should be.

Which light color is recommended for my desk lamp?

For concentrated work during the day, we advise you to use neutral white (above 3,000 Kelvin) or daylight white light (from 5,000 K) with a high blue component. This has an activating effect on the human body and promotes concentration. Warm white light with a maximum of 3,000 K and more red components is well suited if you want to read a book in a relaxed atmosphere at your desk in the evening.

To meet the various requirements, LED desk lamps with adjustable light color are ideal. This allows you to set a cooler light color during the day in the home office and a warmer one in the evening.

What desk lamp is good for the eyes?

To protect your eyes and enjoy optimal visibility while working, glare-free desk lighting is essential. The light source should be well shielded, for example by an opaque lampshade. Just as important as glare-free lighting at the desk is uniform room lighting in the study. It creates a pleasant basic brightness and prevents strong light-dark contrasts, which are quite unpleasant for the eye.

What desk lamp is suitable for children?

The same technical lighting criteria apply to children's desk lamps as to all other desk lamps. A very good quality of light and high functionality are therefore clearly in the foreground. Also important are robust quality and easy operation, for example by means of a switch directly on the lamp. Since desks for children are usually smaller than models for adults, the desk lamps often present themselves in a somewhat more compact design or also with a table clamp, in order to illuminate the desk in a space-saving way. Last but not least, make boys and girls happy with lamps in designs suitable for children.

Can I use a floor lamp as a desk lamp?

Provided that floor lamps meet the criteria already mentioned for a desk lamp, they can illuminate the workplace just as well. So if the floor lamp is glare-free, provides sufficiently good light and convinces with an authentic color rendering, it fulfills good prerequisites for use as a desk lamp. In addition, an adjustable luminaire is recommended, where you can direct the light in a targeted manner.

Make sure that you can operate the floor lamp for the desk from a sitting position if possible. For this purpose, articulated arms should ideally be located above the edge of the desk and a pushbutton or dimmer should be easily accessible on the lamp. Alternatively, models with gesture control or smart controllable variants are available.

Tip: Particularly practical are

Where should the desk lamp be placed?

Place your desk lamp so that the light falls sideways at an angle from above onto the work surface. To avoid shadows cast by your hands in the process, position the lamp on the correct side. Right-handers:inside place the lamp on the left side, left-handers:inside place it on the right side.
