The hallway is the first room we enter when we come home, and the last one we leave when we go outside.
As the welcoming place for our guests, we want our hallways to feel warm and inviting. And nothing makes others feel welcome like the right hallway lighting. A combination of room, mood, and area lighting sets the scene, creates a cozy illuminated atmosphere, and provides for just the right amount of brightness.

Hallway lights for room lighting
Room lighting sets a delightful tone in your hallway and serves as a means of orientation. It allows you to create a uniform level of brightness both day and night – even in windowless hallways. Wide-beam ceiling lights are often used for this purpose, and prove to be an excellent choice for illuminating hallways.
Recessed spotlights, which are usually simple and discreet, tend to go extremely well with suspended ceilings. You can also opt for swiveling, surface-mounted spotlights, and combine them with upward-facing wall lights for a warm and cozy feel.
Hallway lighting for different zones
Area lighting is used to illuminate specific areas and thereby provide hallways with added depth and dimension. Area lighting is set up in accordance with the decor of your hallway.
Mirror lights are used to illuminate mirrors in your hallway. Anti-glare uplights are ideal for illuminating faces and figures. Feel free to place two up-and-down wall lights next to the mirror for some beautiful accent lighting. The important thing is that the lamps give off plenty of bright light.
Swivel spotlights and other picture lights are perfect for highlighting pictures or paintings in hallways. In order for your lighting to be uniform, the spotlights must be properly spaced and positioned.
Cabinet lights are used to illuminate cabinets, coat racks, and shelving units. Spotlights with adjustable heads or spotlight rails (provided you only have one ceiling outlet) are excellent choices here. If you have multiple power outlets, feel free to mount individual spotlights (evenly spaced) on your ceiling. Make sure the heads of the lights can be adjusted. Hallway lights with mood light
When it comes to hallway lighting, mood lighting is the icing on the cake. As its name suggests, mood lighting is used to set a mood. It is not necessarily used to light up a room. Instead, it provides for small pockets of light which create a cozy and welcoming atmosphere.
A good example of mood lighting is a table lamp that directs its light downwards or gently scatters light in all directions. Simply place the lamp on the floor or on a sideboard for an enchanting look in the hallway. Battery-powered lights and LED candles are also great for creating the cozy feel you desire.

How many lumens do I need for my hallway lighting?
Among other things, the required number of lumens depends on the size and layout of your hallway, as well as the amount of reflection in the hallway and the purpose, characteristics, and efficiency of the lighting. Other factors include whether the light is direct or indirect, and whether your hallway is rather bright or dark. Feel free to check out our chart to determine the right amount of ambient lighting for your hallway.
Furthermore, depending on the arrangement of the hallway, certain lights are used for area lighting (e.g., for a mirror, picture, or cabinet), or mood lighting to create a warm atmosphere.
In general, the following applies: the longer or more angular the hallway, the more lumens it needs. Also keep in mind that darker pieces of furniture and walls absorb more light than lighter ones. If the furnishings in your hallway are on the darker side, then you’ll need more powerful hallway lights.
Where should I put a light on the wall in my hallway?
Above all, you want to make sure the light from hallway lights does not cause glare. For up-and-down lights or downlights, we recommend mounting at eye level, or around 170 to 180 cm from the floor.
For uplights (which provide for warm, indirect lighting), feel free to mount the lights a little higher. In any case, it should not be possible to see the light source directly. This is especially important when lighting stairs.
When is it a good idea to install hallway lights with motion detectors?
Hallway lights with motion detectors are always a good idea if your hallways are used often.
They are also convenient in hallways where the light switch is not easily accessible, or when coming home with your arms full of groceries.
Innovative, recessed wall light sets with master slave switches (such as Winglet lights) are extremely practical and can be combined with other sets of lights. When one light is activated, the others switch on automatically and switch off again simultaneously a little while later. This is a great solution for staircases.
What is the best way to light a small hallway?
One large or two small ceiling lights (installed in the middle of the ceiling) are usually sufficient for lighting a small hallway. You can also add a light to provide area lighting (e.g., for a coat rack or mirror).
In general, light is a wonderful way to make small hallways appear larger. Wall-mounted uplights are extremely effective in this regard as they shine their light on the ceiling and the upper half of the wall, making the ceiling look higher and the hallway bigger. Flat LED ceiling lights or recessed lights are also practical for small hallways since they take up no actual space in the room.
How do I light a long, winding, or angular hallway?
In order for light to reach all parts of a winding or angular hallway, you'll need to use more than one hallway light. Multiple LED spotlights are perfect for brightening up walls and creating dazzling accents. Spread the lights evenly on the ceiling to avoid dark corners in the hallway.
How do I light a windowless hallway?
In general, windowless hallways should be illuminated in the same way as hallways with windows. After all, when it gets dark outside, even a hallway with a window needs good lighting.
For hallways without windows, however, we recommend lights with adjustable light colors to set the light in accordance with the time of the day. In this way, you can adjust the lighting such that your hallway is filled with warm white light in the morning and evening, and cooler, more neutral light during the day.
Tip: Modern, smart home lights are extremely practical for adjusting the light of your hallway. You can also use a smart light source in hallway lights with an E27, E14, or GU10 socket.
