Good planning is the be-all and end-all when it comes to garden lighting
Before you make your garden safer and more cosy with lights, you should give some thought to the design.
In order to select suitable locations for the garden lights, it makes sense to first answer a few questions for yourself, such as:
- Where do I spend the most time in the garden?
- Which area of my garden do I want to highlight with light?
- Do I need an outdoor socket for other devices?
- Should the garden light be connected to the domestic power supply?
If, for example, you want to illuminate a garden bed with bollard or ground lights, you should lay cables in the ground before creating the bed. Make sure that the cables are PVC-insulated and surrounded by a 10 cm thick layer of sand. They should also run at least 80 cm below the soil layer.
If you know in advance where in your outdoor area you need a power supply, you can set up a socket column there. Several electrical devices can be connected to it at the same time. You can retain flexibility with mobile outdoor sockets with a ground spike. This is also practical for garden lamps to adapt your lighting concept to the season or plant growth.
Highlight specific areas with garden lights
A well-tended garden deserves stylish lighting. With the right garden lighting, you can accentuate certain areas and make them the centre of attention in your outdoor area. For example, do you want to transform bushes and flower beds into radiant oases of light? Then illuminate them specifically with adjustable spotlights. Alternatively floor lights can be used to highlight specific areas in the garden. You can do this by illuminating a tree from below with a ground lamp, for example. Ground lights are also ideal for bathing seating areas in soft, diffuse light and creating a cosy atmosphere.
As a general rule, a few islands of light are more effective than uniform illumination of the entire garden. This is because the contrasts between light and dark create a certain dynamism and make your outdoor area appear more lively. What can this look like? We have a few ideas for you:

- Bollard lights put the flower bed or garden pond in the right light.
Only a well-lit path is safe
Comprehensive garden lighting includes the illumination of accessible areas - after all, you want to be able to move around your garden safely in the dark. Sufficiently bright light that does not dazzle is recommended for good visibility. Bollard luminaires with downlights are suitable for this purpose. Recessed lights that "disappear" into the ground are very space-saving.
Tip: If you find yourself in a poorly lit area of your garden, simply take a portable battery-powered light with you.
What you need to look out for in terms of weather resistance
The IP protection rating tells you how weatherproof your outdoor light for the garden is. It consists of two digits. The first digit describes the protection against foreign bodies. The higher it is, the better the protection. If the light is located close to the house under a roof, a low value of 2 or 4 is sufficient. If you have chosen a location in the open air, a value of 5 or 6 is better. This means that the garden light is protected against dust in damaging quantities or is completely dustproof.
The second digit provides information about water protection. Here too, the higher the value, the better the product is protected. The number 3, for example, indicates that the light is protected against spray water, while 4 stands for protection against splashing water from all sides. If your outdoor lighting is in an unprotected location in the garden, a value of at least 5 or 6 is recommended, as the outdoor lamp is then resistant to water jets or strong water jets. These protection values are usually sufficient for conventional garden lamps.
Special products such as floating lights, on the other hand, should at least be able to withstand temporary submersion. You benefit from even more water protection with pool and pond lights. They must at least be protected against permanent submersion.
Important: If you need connection components such as sockets for your outdoor light, make sure that these also have the required IP protection rating.
Save energy with efficient LED garden lights
Outdoor lights for the garden often shine for long periods of time, often even through the night. Economical operation therefore plays an enormously important role. This is where LED garden lights prove to be unbeatable. They save up to 80 per cent energy compared to incandescent bulbs. Another advantage of LED technology is its long service life. Many modules have a service life of up to 20,000 hours, while some light sources even last up to 50,000 hours and longer. LED technology also has a visual impact on garden lighting. Thanks to the extremely compact design of the modules, many new designs are possible, such as extremely flat or filigree light heads.
Tip: Wherever permanent lighting is not required, use garden lights with motion detectors to save even more energy.
