Hardly any lighting manufacturer is as well known for its impressive glass luminaires as Fontana Arte. Their designs do not come by chance: a competent team of architects, engineers and lighting technicians, in collaboration with the artistic direction of the company, is responsible for the handmade glass creations "made in Italy".
The Italian premium brand was launched in 1932 by Gio Ponti. The then art director of Luigi Fonta & C., the leading crystal and glass processing company at the time, originally founded it as an artistic division of the company. However, shortly thereafter Fontana Arte became an independent manufactory. The focus was initially on stained glass before Gio Ponti recognized the potential of glass for furniture and lighting production. Today, the lighting range includes models made of glass as well as products made of other materials.
Even after many decades, Fontana Arte stands for innovative Italian craftsmanship, which is characterized by its timeless elegance. The creations of the manufactory not infrequently become collectors' items.
Fontana 1853 – shapely light object made of two-layer opal glass
The legendary Fontana 1853 comes from Max Ingrand. The French glass painter and designer designed the table lamp in the 50s and oriented the form on a classic table lamp with fabric shade. Unlike the latter, however, he did not use textiles for the lampshade, but chose mouth-blown two-layer opal glass – just as he did for the bulbous body. This gives Fontana 1853 its unmistakable character and makes it a luminaire icon that creates a cozy ambience with its glare-free mood light.
Fontana 1853 can be operated with retrofit lamps, and there are also variants with LED modules. The highlight: by using several light sources, which can be switched separately, the base also lights up in addition to the shade. While the small lamp of the family sets accents on the bedside table, the two larger models decorate lowboards or low side tables.
IO impressively demonstrates how an original wall lamp can be created from a simple design: a curved shade made of die-cast aluminum encases the LED module and the wall mount, concealing them so that they are not visible from the outside. The soft zone light emerges from both sides and is partially reflected by the wall, creating a soft indirect lighting.
The highlight: IO can be rotated 360 degrees and tilted, making the light cone narrower or wider on the wall. So you align the light specifically according to your wishes and can use the lamp versatile, for example, as a reading light and at the same time background light on the bed or sofa. The infinitely dimmable LED lamp is available in several attractive colors.
