Design

By mean of the Ipnos Outdoor, Flos presents an innovative floor light that can be used indoors as well as outdoors. The most striking feature is the particularly minimalist housing that consists of no more than some delicate aluminium bars. The reduced frame of the Flos Ipnos Outdoor almost invisibly houses the energy-efficient LED modules. The light was designed in accordance with the form of a classic lantern. Taking this form as a basis, all redundant elements were removed until solely the delicate frame of the Ipnos remained – a prime example of minimalist design.

Designer

Nicoletta Rossi and Guido Bianchi designed the Ipnos Outdoor Floor lights in 2014 for the manufacturer Flos.

Ipnos Outdoor floor lights: atmospheric light with an artistic character

At first sight, the Flos Ipnos Outdoor initially looks like a piece of art, a modern sculpture. Only when the light is switched on, the floor light reveals its luminous secret to the viewer – then a total of 196 LED lamps softly illuminate the surrounding area with diffuse light. The Ipnos Outdoor operates in a particularly energy-efficient manner. And it is economical as the light only consumes 15 watts. However, it still achieves a light intensity of 665 lumens. At the same time, the LED modules used impress by a good colour rendering index of Ra=85. The LEDs are covered by diffusers that ensure a diffuse distribution of light and at the same time offer protection from vibrations. Thanks to protection type IP65, the floor light from Flos is protected against the ingress of a harmful amount of dust as well as against water jets coming from any direction.
