This Italian prize has been awarded since 1954 and is thus one of the oldest and at the same time most influential design awards. One of the principles of the Compasso d’Oro (Italian for “Golden Compass”) is that this prize is only awarded to products manufactured in Italy. For this reason, the list of the winners contains an above-average quota of Italian designers; however, designers from other countries can also be awarded the Compasso, provided that their products are manufactured in Italy. The Compasso d’Oro is considered to be one of the most important awards, both nationally and internationally. In 2004, the exhibition of all award winners was recognised as part of the Italian national heritage.
