Bega – tradition & craftsmanship from Germany

The German company Bega is a light manufacturer with a long-standing tradition: founded in 1945 in Menden, a city in the Sauerland region, Bega was initially active as a manufacturer of wrought-iron components for the luminaire production. Back then, this was really unique since during World War II hardly anything was produced that was not relevant for warfare. Over the years, Bega has become one of the most renowned German light manufacturers. The company is active in almost all areas of architectural lighting and enjoys a reputation as a specialist in the field sophisticated lighting solution for outside areas. Bega products have an excellent reputation among architects, interior designers as well as light designers and room planners – Bega lights are applied in numerous projects and public buildings all over the world.

Bega may look back on a quite eventful history. The young company could quickly enjoy its first successes: shortly after the foundation the number of employees amounted to 50 and the range on offer included about 30 luminaires. As a result of the occupation policy of the victorious countries of World War II Bega, however, was

forced to operate in illegality. Only after receiving a production license issued by the British military government could the company officially continue operations. In the following years Bega distinguished itself as a pioneer in terms of light technology. Thus, the company manufactures, among other things, special lights for breweries, the first spotlights for use in water and for operation under water as well as the first portable models with an earth spike. Over the years and decades Bega established its reputation as a manufacturer of advanced lighting solutions for outdoor areas. The product range increased continuously. In the 1980s the production facilities were expanded to more than 51,000 square metres. By now, Bega has more than 500 employees. On the occasion of the company’s 50th birthday in 1995, the 25th catalogue was issued presenting about 1,000 lights. In the 2000s the product range increased to 2,000 lights distributed to about 23 product groups. In recent years, Bega was increasingly committed to the production of lights that are operated with energy efficient LED technology. With a long service life, the efficient light-emitting diodes perfectly fit into the design concept of Bega lights that are designed to

withstand adverse weather conditions over a long period of time.

For several years now, Bega is considered to be one of the most renowned manufacturers of high-quality exterior lighting equipment and offers a large range of different lights for the home and the garden. The robust wall lights, for instance, the popular 3340 and 3341 LED wall lights are ideally suited for a perfect illumination of house entrances, facades or terraces. With a large selection of bollard lights access areas such as driveways and access roads can be illuminated. At the same time, bollard lights create a spatial limitation between access areas and lawns as well as garden areas and paths. Thanks to a large selection of spotlights and floodlights different areas within the garden can be highlighted. Portable spotlights with an earth spike are suitable for mobile use and are the perfect choice if you want to highlight the flora in your home garden. High-performance spotlights provide for an effective facade lighting and make your home look much more inviting.

Bega – the exterior lighting expert

Bega lights distinguish themselves through a high-quality workmanship and the use of robust materials. All products are designed for a long service life and are capable of standing up to adverse weather conditions over a period of many years. All luminaires by Bega are protected according to at least protection class IP44. This specification provides information on how the light is protected from the ingress of foreign bodies as well as moisture. IP44, for instance, indicates that the light is protected against the ingress of foreign bodies with a diameter equal to or larger than 1.0 mm as well as water splashing on all sides. Moreover, all Bega lights stand out due to their excellent workmanship and material quality. Only selected materials may be used for the manufacturing process in order to ensure the highest product quality possible.

One of the top sellers of the product range is undoubtedly the

Lichtbaustein® light brick that is available in various versions and that has been offered by Bega for more than 50 years. Each Lichtbaustein® consists of a composition of robust materials such as stainless steel and a glass body that is hand-blown as part of a traditional procedure. All Lichtbaustein® light bricks can be used in indoor as well outdoor areas. Thanks to the functional, geometrically shaped design, the Lichtbaustein® smoothly fits into the architecture and puts the actual protagonist into the focus: the light. The Lichtbaustein® light brick is available in different versions and sizes as well as with various illuminants. You can choose lights with a rectangular or a square shape, versions with halogen lamps, fluorescent lamps or modern LED technology. The classic of this light family, the square-shaped 66658 Lichtbaustein® light brick, was already awarded the renowned iF Design Award thanks to its sophisticated design.

The brand Bega is now a part of the Gantenbrink Group, which also includes the light manufacturer Glashütte Limburg. Through the acquisition of the exterior light manufacturer BOOM the range of exterior lights was expanded by products that are rather traditional in terms of design. Many of the lights remind us of classic lanterns, for instance, the 1270 wall light or the 1536 bollard light. The Gantenbrink Group designed provided public buildings with spectacular lighting concepts, including a London underground station, public buildings in Germany and hotels, train stations and museums as well as sports stadiums and company headquarters of internationally known companies around the world. The light design of the Tenerife concert house as well as of the Guggenheim museum in Bilbao are also reference examples for buildings equipped with Bega lights.
