Bedside lamps: Mood or reading light directly at the bedside

The bedside lamp is a permanent fixture in many bedrooms and a practical solution for switching on the light in the morning without having to get up.
This is because the lamp is positioned close to the bed and can be conveniently operated from there. Depending on the model, it provides direct, glare-free light for reading or diffuse mood lighting.

Various types of lamp are available as bedside lamps. The classic is the table lamp that sits on the bedside table, but there are also space-saving clamp or wall lamps. Cosy warm white light is generally suitable for bedside lighting, and dimmable table lamps are an advantage.

How you operate your table, wall or clamp light is a question of personal taste: whether by switch, (touch) dimmer or app - anything is possible. Some lights can be integrated into your smart home system and, for example, programmed to wake you up in the morning with soft light.

A bedside lamp usually fulfils one of two tasks. It either provides clear reading light for reading in the evening or it creates a cosy atmosphere with warm mood lighting. For reading, we recommend bedside lamps that allow you to direct light to the desired area without causing glare. An opaque shade that can be flexibly adjusted is an advantage. To create a cosy ambience in the bedroom, however, we recommend bedside lamps that produce diffuse and warm light. Lightbulbs with adjustable light colours are also ideal for this purpose.

1. How many lumens or watts should a bedside lamp have?

A bedside lamp for reading should emit at least 400 lumens; a pure mood light for orientation can manage with less. For optimum reading comfort at the bedside, light11 recommends a table lamp with 500 to 800 lumens, which is roughly equivalent to a 40 to 60 watt light bulb. An LED lamp with this amount of light usually requires between 5 and 10 watts. In addition to brightness, always ensure good glare control so that the light lands exactly where you want it. For combined use as reading and mood lighting, a luminaire with a dimmer is the right choice. This means you can always adjust the amount of light to suit your needs.

2. What height should a bedside lamp have?

The ideal height depends on the specific application situation. It is important that you are not dazzled by the direct view of the light source from the bed. You must therefore consider the height of your bed and bedside table when making your choice. Tip: You can remain flexible with height-adjustable table lamps or models with an articulated arm.
