The energy efficiency of patio lights with LED technology is unbeatable, allowing you to save on electricity costs and protect the environment. Another advantage of LED technology is the long life of the bulbs. Premium models often have a service life of 20,000 to 50,000 hours, which is equivalent to 13.7 to 34.2 years at an average burn time of four hours per day.

Many LED lights are dimmable, some also allow you to adjust the light color to let you customize your patio lighting. Operation is very convenient, especially with smart patio lights, which can be operated via remote control, your smartphone or your tablet.

Terrace lighting with special features

Solar lights

A particularly sustainable lighting of your outdoor area can be achieved by using solar lights that receive their energy from the sun. If you value a pleasant atmosphere, choose terrace lamps giving indirect light, for example light strips. Lights that come with a supplementary socket are highly practical and allow you to connect further electrical devices. Mobile lighting wherever you might need it can be obtained with rechargeable battery lights for the terrace. Terrace lighting with motion detection will switch on and off automatically. Lamps with Bluetooth speakers are always a hit, not only for garden parties. Terrace lamps with a twilight switch will provide light as soon as it gets dark.

Which type of lighting is suitable for a terrace?

You can use various types of lighting for your terrace. One option is employing spotlights or spots which are very easy to adjust. Floor spotlights, for example, can highlight your house front or a flower pot. Several spots can be mounted under the terrace roof or on the house wall and provide a good basic brightness on the terrace.

Recessed floor light are a lighting solution with minimum space requirements, as they are put into the ground. In this way, the light source itself will take a back seat and you avoid tripping hazards. They are suitable for lighting walls and ceilings and serve as decorative points of light. Wall lamps can create interesting lighting effects on your house façade, shedding their light up and down. Wall lights with an opal cover emit their light in every direction, thereby illuminating larger areas of the terrace.

Our advice: Mount these lights outside of the permanent field of vision, because they risk blinding the eyes.

A nice and pleasent atmosphere, for festivities and other occasions, can be created by using fairy lights. Install them on the wall of the house or on a pergola. That way, you will feel like you are sitting right under the starry night sky.

If you want to illuminate your garden table or a lounge area with comfortable seating furniture, why not pick an arc lamp for exterior use? It will give soft zone lighting and constitutes an appealing eyecatcher in your outdoor living room. For additional ambiance lighting on your garden table, choose table lamps or LED candles shedding a diffuse, warm white light.

Our advice: Flexible battery lamps can be used independently of a power outlet nearby and can easily be repositioned anytime.

Which IP code is recommended for terrace lamps?

The IP code consists of two digits. The first one indicates the protection against solid particles, the second one informs about the liquid ingress protection. With a simple principle: a higher number stands for a greater protection.

If the position of your lamp is protected, for example under a terrace roof, your need a lower protection. For the first digit, a figure between 2 and 4 is sufficient, for the second one, 4 is perfect. It indicates that the terrace light is protected against splashing of water.

If the terrace lamp is positioned in the open, you need a stronger protection. Here, both digits should amount to 5 or 6. The lamp is then protected against (powerful) water jets. This means that for a lamp which will be placed under a terrace roof, an IP code IP 44 is a good choice. Terrace lamps which are entirely exposed to weather conditions should have an IP code of at least IP 65 or IP 66.

Important notice: If you need accessories or further components for your terrace lighting, make sure that these also possess the required IP codes.

Which patio lamps suit my style of living?

If you have a modern-style patio, with restrained colors and discrete shapes, choose modern patio lighting for businesslike elegance. Do you like the

country house style

? Then lights made of natural materials, such as wood, are a good choice. For an antique style that evokes nostalgic feelings, we recommend lantern-style lights that will acquire a natural patina over time. If you want to add an

industrial flair

to your patio, use outdoor lighting with many elements made of metal or stainless steel.
