Artemide Meteorite – cosmic illumination by means of Venetian Murano glass

The lampshade of the Meteorite by Artemide is made from Murano glass, which according to the Oxford Dictionaries website is "decorative glassware of a type associated with the island of Murano near Venice." This high-quality glass, hand-blown and hand-ground, is used to manufacture the appealingly beautiful, double-coated shade of each Artemide Meteorite. Their crater-like surface is ground subsequently and the glass thicknesses created as a result of this process present a faceted pattern. As the name might already indicate, these shades arouse associations with meteorites, those cosmic rocks that have fallen to the earth’s surface from outer space. As newcomers on the earth they take over new tasks: as Artemide lights for the wall, the ceiling and the table.

Thanks to their natural, almost archaic appearance, kept in an unobtrusive white, the Artemide Meteorite quickly takes over the role of a purist eye-catcher. Moreover, Murano glass is known for being able to filter the light in a particularly fine way and thus provides for a pleasant, soft lighting. The soothing, glare-free light of a Meteorite by Artemide is emitted in all directions and thereby ensures a harmonious atmosphere. The pleasant lighting effect is supported by the use of halogen lamps, which are highly appreciated due to their excellent colour rendering.

Meteorite: "incomplete" luminaires for a harmonious light

The great art of glass blowing and the professional finishing can be admired, for instance, when taking a look at the Artemide Meteorite Soffitto/Parete. The ceiling light that can also be used as a wall light enriches every room, both as a light source as well as an eye-catcher. As such, the Meteorite Soffitto/Parete seems to be "incomplete" in a very charming way – and this earns it many popularity points. Its friendly light is particularly appreciated in a hall, where the Artemide Meteorite creates an inviting atmosphere. However, the Artemide Meteorite Sospensione is only intended for use as a ceiling light.

The pendant light is often used in the dining room, where its unobtrusive light distributed in all directions provides for a balanced lighting. At times, this pendent lamp is also installed above the coffee table in the living room. Our range is complemented by the Artemide Meteorite Tavolo. Ideally, this table light is also equipped with a halogen lamp which allows an almost natural colour rendering in its surrounding area. It is predestined to be placed on a sideboard or a commode, where it creates cosy islands of light and thus increases the feel-good factor within the room.

Additional information on the designers: the Artemide Meteorite was designed by two Italian brothers. Pio and Tito Toso, born in 1971 and 1973 in Venice, majored in architecture and can look back on quite a number of national and international projects. In the area of lighting, they do not only collaborate with Artemide but also with further renowned manufacturers such as Foscarini and Leucos. They once said the following on their work with light: "We love to work with light. Light can have endless variations, paints the world with its nuances. Our research leads us to blend a strong poetic flair with the best possible light comfort. A work suspended between rational human thinking and the true, spontaneous, beautiful poetics of nature!"

Moreover, their long list of customers includes famous names such as Alessi or Rossi di Albizzate. They also contributed to the design of trade fair booths, exhibitions spaces, retail stores, offices and department stores. Their most famous works include the Flag coat hanger by Pedrali and Globe, which is a perfectly versatile piece of furniture. In 2012, they won the Red Dot Award.

Additional information on Venice: the lagoon city that also includes the Island of Murano is considered to be the cradle of Central European glass production.
