Mesmerizing light by water droplets – Artemide Mercury

The lighting series Mercury by the Italian manufacturer Artemide is part of the Hydro series. Here, the topic of water is addressed in an incomparable manner by means of “light stones”, which submerge our space into an almost unbelievable atmosphere in the shape of an amazing light display.

The Artemide Mercury Soffitto demonstrates that formidably. The ceiling light gives the astonished beholder inspiring associations of dewdrops hanging down from the ceiling. The silvery droplets appear to float in the air and give him the impression of weightlessness. But the works of British Designer Ross Lovegrove can also linked to liquid quicksilver, as the name “Mercury” suggests. So, an impressive creation of dynamic fluid is embodied by the Artemide Mercury Sospensione. Like the rest of the Artemide Mercury family, this pendant light plays with the possibilities of light refraction. Thanks to two unremarkably integrated 160 W eco halogen lamps, the light is cast upward to be reflected back downward by a precious aluminium reflector and eventually toward the “light stones” made of injection-molded thermoplastic. Result: An almost overwhelming play of light that not only illuminates the space, but also reminds of a sophisticated piece of art.

But this series’ wall and pendant lights have an outstanding impact with the power switched off too: The Artemide Mercury Sospensione appears like a sculpture, which reflects the natural light of the environment and mirrors, for example, the movements of people who pass by. When the Artemide Mercury lamp is switched on, it unleashes a spectacular scenario of light running between the stones. Smaller in size, but not less impressive does the Artemide Mercury mini present itself. Available as a wall and pendant fixture, it offers – besides the light show – sufficient illumination in the shape of atmospheric ambient light, which is not only appreciated in the living room, but also in the dining area.

If you consider sustainability and environmental consciousness very important, you should go for the Mercury Sospensione or Soffitto LED. These pendant lights are delivered with energy saving LEDs, which are paragons of efficiency and longevity. Furthermore, they supply warm-white illumination with a light colour of 3000 Kelvin. The extraordinary design of Artemide Mercury lamps is due to several elements. According to the model, between five and ten differently sized reflectors made of pre-cut, shiny aluminium hang from different-length nylon threads on a disc made of die cast aluminium.

Star designer Ross Lovegrove, born in Wales, has never designed his objects angled, edged or just according to functionality. Instead, he always gives his works an organic form. In doing so, he uses the newest materials, biological forms of creation and digital production technologies. Lovegrove himself subtitles his drafts as “Organic Dreams”, in which ergonomics and sensuality unite.
