How do I light garages and carports without electricity?
To illuminate garages and carports without electricity, solar lights are a good solution. The battery-powered lamps are available, for example, as recessed floor, bollard or wall lights.
We advise you to always check whether the amount of light is sufficient. This is because the light output of mobile lights is generally lower than that of wired versions.
Solar lights with more than 300 lumens
are recommended.What are the regulations for garage lighting?
For public areas, DIN EN 12464-1 regulates, among other things, the illuminance for garage lighting. For private areas, on the other hand, there are no specific regulations. However, we recommend that you always make sure that the usual criteria for outdoor lighting are met.
Here, the protection class in particular plays a major role. How high this should be depends on where your luminaire is located. For example, if it is a recessed spotlight that you install under your carport or a canopy, outdoor lamps with a protection rating of IP24 or IP44 are sufficient. Exposed façade lights, on the other hand, should have at least an IPX5 rating to be protected against water jets.
Another tip: Switch different areas separately and protect each with its own residual current circuit breaker. In this way, you prevent it from going completely dark in the event of a short circuit. In addition, such selective planning will help you find the cause of the fault more quickly if the outdoor lighting should ever malfunction.
How do I illuminate driveways that can be driven on?
There are many different ways to light a driveway that is both safe and aesthetically pleasing. You are welcome to combine several ideas. Possible options include:
- Recessed wall luminaires with orientation light or light in the direction of the driveway
- Bollard luminaires with orientation light or light downwards for driveways
- Facade luminaires on the garage wall or the house facade next to the driveway

If you choose recessed floor luminaires, choose robust luminaires with a high IK impact resistance rating of at least IK08. These can withstand high mechanical loads, for example from cars.
No matter how you ultimately illuminate your driveway: Ensure good glare control as well as sufficiently bright light.
What spacing should driveway lighting have?
The correct distance of your driveway lighting depends on various factors, especially the amount of light, the direction of light and the beam angle. Therefore, blanket statements are unfortunately not possible.
In any case, make sure that you illuminate your driveway evenly. Make sure that there are no large dark zones between the individual light cones. More important than the brightness is therefore the distribution of the carport, driveway and garage lights.
