Moooi Random Light

After graduating, he worked as a freelance designer and then founded the „Monkey Boys“together with his student friend Daniel White. The two developed lamps and furniture under this name before going their separate ways in 2003. Since then, the Dutchman has been working successfully in his studio Bertjan Pot.

The designer is known among his customers for his technical and equally intuitive way of working. The starting point for his designs is usually extensive material research. Pot likes to experiment with technique, structure, patterns and colours and loves to explore new possibilities. With a great deal of imagination and a keen interest in technology, he creates extraordinary products such as the Random Light.

Pot has also designed other lights for Moooi, such as Heracleum and Prop Light. The organic design of Heracleum is modelled on the inflorescence of an umbellifer and fascinates with a magical play of light. Prop Light, on the other hand, is characterised by its unusual structure made of HIPS plastic, on which transparent glass bulbs are arranged. Each glass bulb contains an LED light source and a conical PMMA light guide, providing uniform illumination.

Random Light is based on an ingenious principle: Bertjan Pot originally wanted to create a new structure for lampshades using fibreglass as the starting material.

However, he was not satisfied with the first result. The designer therefore took a few thin fibreglass threads, soaked them in epoxy resin and wrapped them completely randomly around an inflated beach ball.

Once the epoxy resin had hardened, he let the air out of the ball again. The result was a perfectly shaped lampshade that is still made in this way today.
