How many lumens should an outdoor wall light have?
How many lumens your outdoor wall lighting should have depends on what you intend to use it for. If you want orientation lighting on the facade, about 400 lumens are enough. To illuminate paths along the house wall sufficiently and safely, 400 to 800 lumens is better. For especially good visibility in the dark, we recommend outdoor wall lights with more than 800 lumens.
Useful information: The above values refer in particular to outdoor wall lights with downward-facing lighting as well as with upward and downward-facing lighting. For models with diffused light in all directions and an opal or transparent glass shade, a lower lumen value of 300 lumens maximum is recommended to avoid strong glare.
At what height should I mount my outdoor wall lights?
Outdoor wall lamps for front door lighting should be mounted at about eye level. In practice a height of between 160 and 180 cm has proven to be best for wall lamps and corner lamps. Do you want to illuminate your patio? Then we recommend mounting the light a little lower, so that you’re not subject to glare when sitting or standing.
Tip: When choosing the appropriate height, be sure to take into account the architecture of your house. Align the position of your outdoor wall lights visually to doors, windows and other building elements to create a harmonious overall look.

Outdoor wall lights with motion detectors are practical sources of light, especially at the entrance to the house. Because they switch on automatically when someone approaches, you benefit from several advantages at the same time.
You minimize the risk of tripping because you don’t have to search for the light switch and you don’t have to have a free hand to turn on the light. Outdoor wall lamps with motion detectors also reduce the risk of burglaries, because strangers are more likely to be driven away from your property when the light suddenly turns on. Because the light only turns on when it’s needed, you reduce energy costs, which is also good for the environment.
If the outdoor wall light also has a twilight switch, the light only starts to shine when the natural lighting falls below a certain level, measured in lux. Some products allow you to customize the settings for this level.
Which protection class is recommended for outdoor wall lights?
The IP protection class is an essential criterion when choosing your outdoor lighting and is made up of two digits. The first digit provides information about protection against contact and foreign objects (e.g., insects), the second digit provides information about the light’s level of water protection. The higher the digit, the better the protection.
In most cases, protection class IP X4 is sufficient for outdoor wall lights, because then the lights are splash-proof. If rain cannot have much effect on the outdoor light, for example under covered house entrances, patios or balconies, protection against spray water is sufficient. This is provided by lights with IP X3 protection. If you plan to install your outdoor wall lamp in an unprotected place, a higher protection class such as IP 65 is recommended. In this case, the product is water jet-proof and is also dust-proof.
What are outdoor wall lamps with uplight, downlight, or up and down light suitable for?
Outdoor wall lamps with uplight, downlight, and up and downlight provide glare-free lighting when mounted at the correct height. Which direction of light you should choose depends on the application:
- Outdoor wall lights with uplight create very large visual effects, but they are less suitable as orientation lighting.
- Outdoor wall lights with downlight impressively showcase your house facade, provided they are mounted up high, just below the roof. When mounted at eye level, they also provide good orientation lighting on paths.
